Professional Development

The P.S. ARTS Professional Development Program works to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in our partner schools by providing training and resources for Teaching Artists, Classroom Teachers, and school district administrators. At P.S. ARTS, professional development happens in several areas:
District Partnerships
Los Angeles Unified School District
P.S. ARTS is a member of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Arts Community Partnership network (ACPN), which provides professional development for its classroom teachers. A number of LAUSD schools have chosen P.S. ARTS to provide six-week residencies in visual arts, music, theater and dance to focus on building Classroom Teachers’ skills in incorporating the arts into their classrooms. Several other school districts, including the Lennox and the Bassett Unified School districts have employed P.S. ARTS professional development services.
Lawndale Elementary School District
Our new instructional model, I AM (Integrated Arts Model) currently in place at the Lawndale Elementary School District, emphasizes Professional Development in several ways:
1. Teaching Artist Collaborative PlanningThe six LESD Teaching Artists meet for a series of three week-long planning sessions to integrate their arts curricula and to connect their art disciplines to the school’s core content area.
2. Arts Leadership TeamThe partnership between P.S. ARTS Teaching Artists and Lawndale Classroom Teachers is strengthened through the Arts Leadership Team (ALT), which supports collaboration in the arts and core curriculum areas. P.S. ARTS Program Staff and Teaching Artists work with Classroom Teachers to develop a series of lesson plans that connect the arts to classroom curriculum.
Arts Education Toolkit For the Community
With the generous support of the Ahmanson Foundation and the S. Mark Taper Foundation, P.S. ARTS recently completed our first Arts Education Toolkit, a comprehensive instructional resource of exemplary K-5 curriculum maps and lesson plans in visual arts, music, theater and dance, aligned with California’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Standards.  The toolkit includes video clips providing demonstration support for the Toolkit’s content. Created as a core instructional tool for P.S. ARTS teaching artists, the toolkit is available to Classroom Teachers at our partner schools, and to other arts education organizations and other interested educators.
Teaching Artist Faculty Development
Faculty Development Workshops
The P.S. ARTS staff provides a series of day-long events for our Teaching Artists, focusing on developing best practices in instruction and curriculum development and input from experts on cognitive development, curriculum design and implementation, and working with students with special needs.
Curriculum Supervision
The P.S. ARTS staff assists Teaching Artists in developing their skills in creating curriculum maps and lesson plans to support instructional excellence and help Classroom Teachers find connections arts connections to their content areas.
Coaching/Mentoring
The P.S. ARTS staff performs regular site visits, evaluations and follow-up coaching sessions to help Teaching Artists achieve excellence in curriculum design and teaching practice.
Peer Coaching
For 2008/2009, P.S. ARTS is developing a peer observation/coaching program so that Teaching Artists can work collaboratively to achieve excellence in teaching methodology.
Individual Professional Development
P.S. ARTS encourages and offers support for Teaching Artists to participate in outside professional development programs.

SEVEN 7 components-Teacher and Leader Effectiveness (TLE)

The Department believes that strengthening educator practice can be achieved by improving talent management systems. The Teacher and Leader Effectiveness (TLE) Continuum is made up of seven components that should be used in comprehensive and systematic ways to improve the quality, quantity, and diversity of the teacher and principal workforce, and most importantly – improve student outcomes. Within the context of a comprehensive TLE system, data about educator practice and student learning obtained from evaluation systems can help inform decisions to prepare, recruit, develop, retain, and ensure equitable access to effective educators. Preparation  – Collaboration or formal partnership between LEAs and Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) or other eligible partners. Recruitment and Placement  – Activities to attract the most effective educators to LEAs and the schools that need them. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Ladson-Billings wrote that culturally relevant teachers exhibit confidence in African American students' ability to learn by maintaining high academic expectations and affirming "their cultural identity . . ." (Ladson-Billings, 1995). Culturally relevant teachers harness the power inherent to their occupation to confront institutional and systemic practices which disempower students of color. For these instructors, education becomes a liberatory exercise where classroom assignments become opportunities to teach for social justice. Additionally, culturally relevant instructors place tremendous emphasis on supporting African American students' of academic achievement (Ladson-Billings, 2006). Far from sympathetic, this support represents a sincere desire to take the necessary measures so the educational experience is germane to these students' lived experiences. Lastly, Ladson-Billings asserts that culturally relevant instructor...
