Help me- I hate Citations
I hate them!
What is the big deal with “Citations” & “WHY” are they required?
Identify the source of the information as well as provide information
as to where the information can be located. This can be helpful especially for
readers seeking further information on the subject matter.
Citations allow the author to
document the original source; properly identifying the originator, as well as
ensuring credit or recognition. Think about it: Give credit where credit is deserved,
it would be very unethical to receive credit for another individuals work. Protect yourself- do not take credit for
faulty work? What if your referenced author is found to be incorrect, should you
be faulted? No- CITE YOUR WORK!
What do you cite; typically a
citation should identify:
- Information about the author (identifying the individuals
or individuals, organization etc.)
- The title of the work (name of paper, such as title,
etc.)
- the name and location of the company that published
your copy of the source
- the date your copy was published
- the page numbers of the material you are borrowing
What and when do I need to cite?
Good rule of thumb cite each time you use any of the
following in your paper; use quotes
- paraphrase
- use an idea that someone else has already expressed
- When making a specific reference to the work of another
- If your theory, concept, idea or work is an extension
of another already developed theory, concept, idea or cited work or if
this other theory, concept, idea or work has been essential in its
development.
